City of Heroes has been running for seven years and is now being converted to Free to play MMORPG game. The Free to Play business mode is highly embraced by MMO developers in today’s gaming market.
The superhero MMO publisher NCsoft and Paragon Studios joinly announced the release of City of Heroes would be mix of free to play and subscription based model. The so-called “City of Heroes Freedom” is expected to come later 2011, or early 2012.
The same step was made by Atari in early 2011 with Champions Online going free to play.
In City of Heroes Freedom, each player can, as usual, visit all regions, although some quest lines available only for players using real money. But free to play gamers can only reach level 50. If they want to reach more contents, they will have to go to item shop to buy new equipment or subscribe the new contents. That means the traditional subscription model will be continued in parallel.
So far, the developer did not disclose any pricing details for its upcoming expansion.
